No more of a coherent thought other than she’d never been kissed like this before went through Jane’s mind. She should slap him, push him away, at the very least demand to be put back on her own feet and a good measure of space put between them.

But she did none of those things. Instead, she found herself winding her arms around his neck, parting her lips and sighing against his demanding lips. The spicy-salty scent of him surrounded her, doing something wild to her senses. Suddenly every part of her felt alive with a tingling fire that only seemed ready to burn hotter.

Parting her lips seemed to be a wicked invitation, for as soon as she had done it, his devious tongue swept along the open seam causing her to gasp.

Oh, sweet heavens, but that felt even more divine. Just that little lick sent a jolt rushing through her. And before she could catch her wits from it, he’d done it again, and again, and then her own tongue was reaching forward to test it out. She touched the tip of her tongue to his and could have been struck by lightning, so massive was the force of current that went rushing through her.

This was wicked, oh, so very wicked. And yet, she couldn’t make herself stop.

And did she have to? She’d given herself to this man. Had agreed to share his bed in exchange for him vowing she was his, a marriage that may end up being a total sham for all she knew. But that didn’t change the fact that she’d agreed to it, that in order to be saved from Livingstone, to keep the rightful king safe, she had invited this pirate to lay claim to her.

Lay claim to her, he was. There could be no doubt about it, the way he owned her body at that moment. She couldn’t move. He had her completely enthralled. Completely captivated. Intoxicated.

It was he who pulled away first. He who stared into her bemused eyes with a satisfied expression that she would have found overly irritating if she wasn’t so busy trying to find her bearings.

Shaw set her down on her feet and grinned at her as though he’d plucked a tart straight from her fingers and devoured it.

“I hope that satisfies your need,” she murmured, “for sealing deals.”

He chuckled then, a sound that caressed her nerves, but did very little in the way of calming her. In fact, it did quite the opposite. She licked her lips, trying to avoid looking at his mouth as she wanted him to very much kiss her once more. He might have set her down on her feet, but she was barely standing on her own. Every line in her body reached for him, wanting more of what he’d just given her.

“That was just a taste, love, of what satisfies, but not nearly enough.”

“Shall we do it again then?” she asked in challenge, then felt the heat rush to her face for having spoken so boldly.

Shaw’s darkened gaze swept over her, bold and devilish, and right along with it her body quivered. He wanted her. And she… wanted him.

“Oh, sweet Jane, we shall do it again many more times.”

“This is where I belong. There is no other.” I cry out as I continue to pump my hips. I can see her breasts bouncing beneath her shift with each stroke. I rip the front of her dress and her milky white breasts spill out. With the savageness of a man that has too long been denied a meal, I take her rosy nipple in my mouth and I suckle and bite. Sarah scratches my back as she wriggles beneath me, begging for release. I’m not going to let her finish quite yet; I pull out, but before Sarah can complain, I have her bent over the bed in front of me. I rest my erection at her entrance once more, both of us breathless from our mad lovemaking. unnamed (4)

Sarah pushes back and instead of refusing her, I take her hips in my hands once more and sink into her wetness. Using my feet, I force her stance wider while pushing her body flat on the bed. I look up towards the ceiling with my eyes closed, and let myself feel her sucking me in. I’m so deep this way. I pull almost all the way out and glide my full length in, trying to make it last for as long as possible. This feels like heaven. With each penetration, Sarah moans and I know that she will not be able to hold off her release much longer. I rest along her back, essentially pinning her to the bed and I start pumping my hips. I do something I’ve never done before and lightly bite the skin on her shoulder. As Sarah lets out a scream of pleasure, I can feel her convulsing and squeezing me. I wait until her peak is just cresting and I stand up and thrust into her until I have my finale. I groan, “Sarah,” as my seed spills inside her.

I can see where my fingers dug into her hip as tiny purple bruises are forming. I gasp in disgust when I see the impression of my teeth in her shoulder. I step back, angry at myself for letting it go to this extreme. “I-I’m so sorry, Sarah.” I hang my head unable to meet her eyes. I am truly a disgusting person for doing those things.

Sometimes, the only way to go forward is to take a few, careful steps back.”

Never Ross is a broken soul who doesn’t need to be fixed.  There’s a monster inside of her, eating little bits of her everyday, and she can’t seem to stop it.  It makes her do things she doesn’t want to do, say things she doesn’t want to say.

She’s used to dating guys like Ty McCabe; he’s one of the dangerous ones, the ones with pasts that burn like fire and melt everything around them. But there’s something different about this soul with a sad smile and arms covered in butterfly tattoos, something that tantalizes Never’s shattered spirit.

When Ty and Never form a tentative, almost reluctant, friendship that opens the door on their dark sides and shows them what it’s like to live in the light, they’ll have to face the skeletons in their closets, fight back the blackness and see if two tortured souls desperate for a healing touch can connect into something beautiful.

Broken doesn’t always mean destroyed.

cm stunich

C.M. Stunich was raised under a cover of fog in the area known simply as Eureka, CA. A mysterious place, this strange, arboreal land nursed Caitlin’s (yes, that’s her name!) desire to write strange fiction novels about wicked monsters, magical trains, and Nemean Lions (Google it!). She currently enjoys drag queens, having too many cats, and tribal bellydance.

Always a fan of the indie scene and ‘sticking it to the man,’ Ms. Stunich decided to take the road less traveled and forgo the traditional publishing route. You can be assured though that she received several rejections as to ensure her proper place in the world of writers before taking up a friend’s offer to start a publishing company. Sarian Royal was born, and Ms. Stunich’s books slowly transformed from mere baking chocolate to full blown tortes with hand sculpted fondant flowers.

C.M. is a writer obsessed with delivering the very best and scours her mind on a regular basis to select the most unusual stories for the outside world.

Ms. Stunich can be reached via e-mail or by post and loves to hear from her readers. Ms. Stunich also wrote this biography and has no idea why she decided to refer to herself in the third person.

Julie is a Southern California native, a fan of a really good story (preferably romance with a happily ever after), really good pie (preferably pumpkin) and copious amounts of coffee (preferably Folgers).

She has always enjoyed writing and at one time thought she could be a singer songwriter…the ‘writer’ part is the one that stuck.

Julie is obsessed with pi…the equation(and the food). She’s allergic to cats and cantaloupe and hates mushrooms…so if you ever want to give her a gift, those are out for sure. She currently lives with her own romance hero husband and two boys in Melbourne, Australia.

A damned dream…

He watches her every night, rehearsing alone in his theater, her beauty aglow in the gaslights. With every hour that passes, Marcus Stafford is more entranced with the passionate Gabriela Rozina, and the dream she refuses to give up. His obsession is dangerous and he knows it. She can never know who—or what—he is, and why he can never step nearer than the shadows.

But her heartbreak is his undoing. Sorrow is a currency he’s traded in for two hundred years.

A breathtaking stranger…

Gabriela is moved by the stranger with the silver eyes who emerges from the darkness yet brings brilliant light to her world. Soon, she wants something more from Marcus than his mentorship with her acting. She begs for his touch, his body and his heart—but more than anything, to share his dark secret by giving him her blood.

A doomed love?

As the night draws near of Gabriela’s most vital performance ever, she is in danger of never making it to the stage—unless Marcus fulfills her wish and shares his life force with her. But in the doing, he risks everything, including both their souls.

Had she expected something else?

He’s not there.

It was the same inner demon that delighted in tugging at her insecurities before auditions…and long ago, had heckled her each visitor’s day at the orphanage.

A voice she fought now with shaking fists.

The heckler persisted.

He told you to go away once. He meant it. You didn’t listen. He’s not there.

She secured her stance tighter. Blast it, she knew what she felt, despite the dark theatre answering her desperate gaze. Freezing fingers of sensation claimed her skin more boldly than they’d dared this morning. Her heartbeat pounded like a triple timpani with each passing second into the night. Worst of all, she couldn’t shed this breath-catching awareness…this super real sensation that he still watched her, followed her, haunted her.

She moved to the edge of the stage. Stopped when her toes jutted out into the darkand tried not to liken the view to the unreadable abyss of her senses.

“Coward!” she accused into the chasm. “Backing down from the challenge, now that I’ve figured out a little more than I should? Hiding in your precious shadows, Sir High and Mighty Theatre Owner? Enjoying the drama of the hopeless actress, going slowly insane?”

As she backed off the edge, she shook her head in slow-burning fury. “I hope you like tonight’s repertoire, Marcus. It’s the last you’ll get. I don’t play to ghosts.” She pivoted toward the wings. “Or thieves.”

As she marched across the stage, she refused to let the dry heat behind her eyes liquidate. She refused to let her shoulders sag or her step falter. She’d give in to her humiliation only after escaping those all-seeing silver eyes.

Wherever the bloody hell they were.

Two steps from the stage left wings, she gasped and skidded to a halt. Two black-clad, black-booted legs stepped into her path. Her journal and reticule hit the floorboards between those boots with a forceful thwack. They were tossed there from a long-fingered hand.

Gabriela’s stare connected that hand to an arm, the arm to an endlessly broad shoulder, encased in billowy black silk. Her sights continued up the cords of a taut neck, to the spiritual intensity of Marcus’s face.

If it were possible, the otherworldly force of him radiated even more potent impact tonight. He looked hewn of dark gold granite under the gas lights, his hair swept around his high forehead like onyx turned to velvet.

But most of all, he looked furious.

He glared at the purse and the journal, then back to her. “I am not a thief.”

Gaby didn’t pick up the items. Not yet. She nudged one foot forward, her reticule on one side, his boot on the other.

She raised her stare, issuing the same challenge to his eyes. “You took them without my permission. You stole them.”

“I borrowed them.”

“Borrowed?” She sliced out an incredulous laugh. “Oh, this is a new way to play the scene.”

“You mean to tell me you decided to borrow my reticule—”

“Planning a big evening out and didn’t have one of your own?”

“And my journal. That’s the worst of it, Marcus. Did you stop to think what you took from me—the record of my deepest thoughts and feelings? Did you consider asking before you violated my privacy, my life?”

For a long moment, he issued no reply. But with the slightest motion, he’d pressed his boot against her foot—beckoning her sights up to his again. She cursed the thousand butterflies in her belly that lifted wing along with her gaze.

“If I asked…where would your answer have lie?”

Gaby compressed her lips, letting silence stretch again.

“I rest my case.” He dropped his gaze. But not before Gabriela glimpsed a flash of silver light beneath his dark lashes—his surrender to a moment of such intense pain, his eyes looked as if they really did glow…

She shook her head. This was no time for such hallucinations. Blast it, he’d wronged her, not the other way around. She snatched her pity back from him, recognizing it for the dangerous emotion it was. But she held on to the anger.

“Well?” She locked her arms across her chest.

Marcus didn’t look up. “Well what?”

She slid her foot away from his. Suddenly, her voice didn’t come so strongly. “Well…did you read it?”

He considered her question for what felt like hours. Finally, he looked up again. Slowly leaned toward her, appearing like a great beast used to watching every step for fear it would crush something.

Damn him.

Damn him for saying it with such meaning, for looking penitent yet proud as he did. Again, as if he’d experienced every fear and feeling, every triumph and sorrow she’d expressed on those pages.

“That will not procure you an apology.” He towered closer. So mesmerizing. A fine wine in human form, dominating her senses, whether she liked it or not. “I am not sorry I did it.”

“Yes.” She snorted. “I know.”

“Your words are beautiful.”

“Stop it.”

“I memorized them.”

“You think that’s going to redeem you?”

“Sweeting, nothing can redeem me.”

The night held its breath around them.

About Author

Hi there. I’m Angel: book lover, writing addict, hopeless romantic, pop culture geek and avid shoe lover.

A bit about me…

I’ve been hooked on books since I was a kid but it got worse in my twenties, when I discovered romances–the hotter, the better. Growing up in Southern California, with lots of surfer manliness surrounded me, was certainly a good boost for reading about delicious alpha guys and the women who adore them. When I learned I had a knack for telling these stories too, I guess you could say I was doomed–though my path toward romance novelist took a few detours via a concert-reviewing gig for my college newspaper (free show tickets…backstage passes…that was a no-brainer), artist interviews for a Beverly Hills dance music mag, personal assistant work for a record producer, dance club disc jockey, and a lot of fun in the hospitality industry.

These days, I still live in California, and have found an amazing alpha guy of my own who was brave enough to marry me. We live on a street that looks like Brigadoon, with our beautiful daughter. I have the best life ever, and never forget to thank the Big Guy Upstairs for it, either.

That word holds so many meanings.

To be pulled down by gravity.
To drop to a lower position.
To experience defeat or ruin.
To pass into a particular state, condition, or situation.

Regardless, falling of any kind was against the rules. To my parents, falling meant failing. Failing is okay for anyone but me, Courtney Rivers, their only child with the brains to follow in my dad’s footsteps.
Just not the heart.
I’ve never wanted to be what was expected of me. I just wanted to be me. The girl who loves loud music, comic books, and Hans Solo. So I left Courtney in New Jersey with the high life I was never meant for and became Cory Rivers. The secret heiress who is anything but prim, and instead of following the rules, I make my own.

Sex, sticks, and quick money are all I’ve ever needed in life. Everyone knows the ‘L’ word doesn’t exist for me, Ryan Phillips, the playboy of Mobile, Alabama. It is a thing. A word. It is just that… an IT. That changes at some point, because one day, I realize that IT isn’t just a thing. For the first time in my life I need more.
I need her.
She’s stubborn, talented, and sexy, and the only person that believes in me. She makes me see that, when I do something, I put everything into it: sex, drums, even love. But I can also fuck up. Falling flat on my face with no one to count on, I have to depend on myself to win her back.

Show her that she’s worth falling for.
That IT’s worth falling for.

“Falling is exactly what you need in life.
But what happens when you fail the one you fall for?”

Tempting an Earl is not for the faint of heart.
Thank heavens Bethanny is anything but faint!
Now, honest, perhaps–too honest, but never faint!
After all, why flirt when you can tempt? And why the devil would a woman choose to swoon, when she could be kissed?
Of course, she’d never try something so…honest, on anyone but Lord Graham.
He’s the only one she wants.
He alone has her heart.
He hadn’t a clue.
So it was only polite that she tell him.
Now, if only her blasted guardian, the Duke of Clairmont, would see Graham as more of a suitor than his old friend.
Because Graham is anything but old and most certainly not just a friend, not after that kiss, or that touch.
Though, if she were to lay all her cards on the table–which any gently bred woman ought–he wasn’t completely aware it was her mouth, her lips, or her touch.
But that’s beside the point now, isn’t it?

Loving her was betrayal, resisting her was impossible.

“I wasn’t aware that this part of the house was open to the guests.” A rich masculine voice startled her from her musing.

“Pardon?” Bethanny immediately stood, straightened her posture, and felt the wild gallop of her heart.

This couldn’t be good.

She was alone, with a stranger, on a secluded balcony.

The duke was going to murder her.

If she made it out without being ruined.

Dear Lord.

“It is not. What, might I ask, are you doing here?” she asked in her firmest tone.

“I only just arrived, and, after the evening I’ve had, found I needed a moment to regain my composure. I’m a friend of the duke and am quite certain I’m allowed on his private balcony. What about you?” he asked, a slightly teasing tone to his voice.

Bethanny narrowed her eyes. They had adjusted to the dim light, and as recognition dawned, her heart hammered in her chest.

“I’m quite certain I’m permitted to be here as well,” she responded, not quite knowing what to say. Did he recognize her? Was he simply teasing because he already had figured out who she was?

“Ah, a friend of the duchess then?” he asked lightly as he made his way toward her.

He definitely did not recognize her.

However, she couldn’t determine if this was a bad thing or a good one. And it was rather dark. After a moment’s deliberating, she decided to play along.

What could it hurt?

“You could say that.” She shrugged. Then, feeling mischievous, she lowered her gaze and offered her most flirtations smile, hoping his eyes had adjusted to the dark, and he could perhaps notice it.

At least she hoped it was flirtatious.

After a moment, she risked a glance up to his shadowed features; a playful grin was tipping his lips and showed off the fairest hint of those beloved dimples she so fondly remembered.

She sighed… inwardly, of course.

“It’s quite a nice view, peaceful, if I may say so.” He came to stand beside her.

He was taller than she remembered, and possibly broader as well, but she couldn’t be sure with the faint light.

“Exactly why I came to this very place.”

“Is it quite the crush inside then?” he asked. There was a slight lilt to his voice, not quite a brogue, but not the crisp English she was accustomed to hearing. He must spend quite a bit of time at his estate in Edinburgh to have taken on the faint accent.

She would have to thank Lady Southridge later for all the helpful information regarding her brother.

“Crush would be an understatement,” she replied too quickly, her tone a bit wry.

“Not a fan of the crowds?” he asked, his tone light. “Or were there far too many gentlemen seeking the attentions of so beautiful a lady?”

Even in the darkness, his gaze was powerful, spearing right through her causing a myriad of strange sensations to swirl around in her belly.

“Or perhaps I simply wanted a moment to myself.” she answered, her tone far more breathless than she would have liked.

“Perhaps.” He shrugged.

“You don’t believe me.” She narrowed her eyes.

“No,” he replied, unfazed.

“Why ever not?” Bethanny asked, turning to face him fully.

“In my experience, ladies do not visit deserted balconies unless they wish to be found.”

Slightly shaking her head, Bethanny replied, “Which is exactly why I choose to use the private balcony? The one closed off from the party?” she asked in a disbelieving tone.

“I thought not.” She shrugged her shoulder, a smile teasing her lips at besting him.

“You’re a cheeky one,” he replied, his tone holding a hint of awe.

“I prefer intelligent.”

“Yes, I believe you would.” He nodded, his grin widening.

“That sounded dangerously like an insult, my lord,” she teased.

“No, no insult… simply… delayed respect.”

“Respect?” Bethanny asked with a dubious tone.

“Indeed. Certainly a lovely lady such as yourself has to be aware that social functions can be quite… tedious.”

“I’m sure the duke will be thrilled you think so highly of his party,” she replied, a smile tugging at her lips.

“You mistake my meaning. People can be tedious. Petty even. It’s simply… refreshing to speak with a woman who doesn’t fall into those categories.”

“I do believe that was a compliment.”

“It was, and you should take it as such.”

“Why, thank you.” Bethanny stepped back and performed a deep curtsey, as if being presented at court.

“And a sense of humor to boot. I might have to actually find out your name.” Graham chuckled, his dimples in full view.

“And ruin the mystery? I think not.” Bethanny rose from her curtsey, her heart pounding.

“I do love a good mystery.”

“Avid reader?” Bethanny asked.

“Yes… but that’s not what I was referring to.”

His posture changed, as did his expression, and at once, Bethanny’s heart took flight because some instinct, some feminine awareness told her with all certainty that he was no longer simply teasing an innocent.

He was pursuing.

“Oh?” Her tone was breathless to her own ears, and she silently scolded herself for the betrayal of weakness.

“So, mysterious miss of the duke’s balcony…” he teased, offering her a dramatic nickname.

“Is that the best you can come up with? Mysterious miss of the duke’s balcony?” she asked, a laugh escaping her restraint.

“I thought it was quite clever myself.” Graham paused his pursuit, his smile widening.

“It sounds like a Gothic novel.”

“You know, you’re quite right. I could have a future there if I ever so desire.”

“Gad, no. Offering my service for creating titles.”

“I’m not sure that’s a lucrative endeavor.”

“Perhaps.” He shrugged and took another step forward. “But you must admit, you’d be curious hearing that title. I know my curiosity is quite piqued.”

Bethanny took a deep breath, as deep as her corset allowed, and drew up all her courage. “Perhaps. I might be curious… but there would have to be something more than a catchy title, my lord.” She knew she was playing a dangerous game, but it was a game she had dreamed of playing since she’d first seen Lord Graham.

The memory of him trading banter with Berty over dinner one night flashed to her memory. Most lords wouldn’t give a little girl the time of day, yet Lord Graham had traded wit with her, enjoying himself even. Bethanny had been envious of her little sister’s ability to bait him. She’d sworn that someday she’d have her turn.

That day had finally come.

It didn’t matter that he didn’t recognize her. Regardless, he was still there speaking with her.

And for now, that was enough.

She opened her mouth to speak, but her nerves got the best of her and, rather than speak, she dropped her fan.

Likely because she had forgotten she had brought it in the first place.

It clattered to the floor lightly, and she closed her eyes in embarrassment at her own clumsiness.

“Allow me,” Lord Graham spoke.

“No I’ve—” Bethanny’s eyes flew open as she knelt down to retrieve her fan.

As luck would have it, her elbow soundly clocked Lord Graham’s head as he rose from retrieving the offending object.

“Ow!” He reached up to rub the surely sore area.

“I’m so sorry!” Bethanny spoke, horrified.

“Blo—er… ah, that… is fine, miss.” He closed his eyes a moment, likely from the dull pain her elbow had needlessly inflicted on his person.

“I’m ever so sorry, my lord!” Bethanny felt her face heat with a scarlet blush that had to make her practically glow. She certainly felt like it. Without thinking, she reached up to his scalp and felt for the knot, her thumb grazing slightly over the skin as to not cause him discomfort, much like she had done a million times to her sisters.

But Lord Graham was most definitely not her sister…

Her hands stilled as she realized just what she was doing. “Forgive me, my lord.” She quickly withdrew her hands and took a step back, belatedly realizing just how close she had been to him. The scent of cinnamon and cedar hung in the air, wrapping a spell of enticement around her, beckoning her to come closer. She started to take a step back, away from the temptation, but his hand at her back stopped her.

Practically burned through her, or so it felt.

“I’m quite well. However, I thank you for your concern,” he whispered, his voice intimate.

“I—I’m usually not quite so… graceless,” Bethanny answered, her thoughts muddled by the intense gaze with which he captivated her. In the moonlight, his amber eyes were silver, his golden-hued skin a soft buttery gold. He was beautiful.

“I’m quite thankful you are… you see, I was trying to find some excuse to hold you, and you neatly provided me with the perfect opportunity,” he murmured, his gaze leaving hers and traveling down the line of her jaw and the curve of her nose before resting on her lips.

Dear Lord, he is going to kiss me.

“I do think you could have done without the knot I gave you at the top of your head,” she replied, her words teasing but her tone far from it.

“A small price to pay.” He shrugged. “However, I do believe there is a custom, when one gets an injury.”

“Indeed, usually, the injured party is given a kiss.”

“Is that so? Silly me. I thought that was only practiced in the nursery.” Bethanny raised a challenging eyebrow as her heart raced, beating an excited rhythm that hoped he would make good on his word and, indeed, kiss her. However, it would never do to appear too eager.

“I have it on good authority that it is still practiced outside of the nursery as well… so, being with tradition and all, I would appreciate a kiss.” His dimples deepened as his smile widened then relaxed as his gaze once again became deep and soulful, searching hers.

“I cannot see the harm in upholding tradition. If you’ll simply bow your head—” Bethanny began, knowing full well that was not his intention.

“Of course.”

And before Bethanny could even close her eyes, his lips caressed hers. The touch was soft, lingering and velvety. His warm breath tickled as he drew back slightly. Her eyes, which hadn’t closed, gazed directly at his. As if spoken out loud, his gaze asked for permission to kiss her again. At her slight nod, his lips met hers once more; however, this time, Bethanny closed her eyes, not wanting anything to distract from her first kiss, and as she had always hoped, it was from Lord Graham.

Excerpt 1

Especially someone he l- cared for.
A sound drew his attention and he turned to see Caroline trying to get herself back onto Fortuna.
No doubt she was trying to storm away. But since Fortuna was far too large for Caroline to be able to reach the stirrups alone, all she had managed to achieve was to be halfway up the horse, with one foot in the stirrup and the other dangling uselessly as her arms clearly did not have the strength to continue pulling.
“Er – what exactly are you doing?” he asked politely.
“Minding my own business,” she snapped back, “you should try it.”
Ah, she was still upset.
He didn’t think he’d ever seen her in a rage before. It was most amusing.
“Let me help you”, he tried again.
With a huff, she gave up on the frankly impossible task of mounting her horse alone.
She whipped round to face him, her face red from the exertion of scaling a horse, her eyes flashing fire.
“Oh, now you want to help?” she drawled sarcastically. “Well, no thank you. You have made your feelings on helping me perfectly clear.”
Tom felt his temper rise to match her own.
“I cannot believe that you are angry with me for trying to preserve your reputation.”
“Hang my reputation”, she shouted now.
“Hang it, indeed. You forget I know you Caroline and I know that you may speak as if you do not care but I was there the night you decided that your reputation was more important to you than anything else in the world, remember?”
His outburst brought an abrupt stop to her ranting and there was a deadly silence between them both.
He had thought that his words had taken the sting out of her mood? That she would apologise and say that he was right?
He watched as she bowed her golden head and waited for her to lift it again, to see her eyes filled with contrition.
Lift her head she did, but her eyes were glinting with determination now. Not contrition.
He was immediately suspicious.
“I have told you before, I am well aware of what I did two years ago. And what it cost me”.
His heart slammed at her words. Was she saying that she regretted it? That she felt she had lost him?
When all it would take was a word from her?
Before he could speak, however, she continued.
“I am prepared to live with the choices I have made. And live with them I will. I will become everything I thought I wanted to be and I will do so with good grace, as all ladies do.”
She sounded now much more like the Caroline of old and he felt a certain relief at it. This new Caroline kept him constantly wrong-footed and it wasn’t a feeling he liked.
“However”, she continued, a hard edge to her voice now, “I am still absolutely determined to enjoy a little scandal before that happens. And if you won’t help me I will find someone who will.”
A rage such as Tom had rarely felt burst through him at her words. The thoughts of her kissing another man as she had been kissing him just moments before were enough to make him want to hit something.
“Like hell you will”, he growled.
She raised a disdainful brow.
“And who will stop me?”
She was goading him. He knew it. He knew that he should not rise to it. Knew that she was probably calling his bluff.
And yet…
What if she were true to her word? What if she meant to give another man her smiles, her laughs, her kisses?
He’d be damned to hell before he allowed that to happen.
Looking her dead in the eye, he reached out and grabbed her to him.
Her eyes widened but rather than fear, they held unbridled passion and excitement. And it was his undoing.
“Me”, he finally answered before once again crushing her lips beneath his own.

Excerpt 2

Caroline was bored, and decided to take yet another walk in the gardens.
Her stroll took her around to the front of the house and she was surprised to see the arrival of a lone rider to the front of the house.
Her brow creased in confusion. As far as she knew, Tom wasn’t expecting his guests for another day or two.
Her attention was caught by the arrival of another two riders coming up the long driveway. She dearly hoped it was Tom to greet his guest.
Unsure as to whether she should greet the stranger or disappear until someone else arrived, she watched as he dismounted and made his way to the front door.
His gait was very familiar. So too was his dark hair.
Caroline stepped closer and then gasped in surprise.
It was Charles!
“Charles”, she called and ran toward him.
Her brother turned at her shout, and he grinned as Caroline ran up the steps.
“Hello, Caro” he said in his deep voice before he pulled her into a hug that pulled her from her feet.
Charles had always towered over her and he made Rebecca look positively tiny.
“What are you doing here?” she asked now, completely forgetting about the imminent arrival of the other riders in her excitement.
“I came to Town and was told by Edward’s servants that you were all here. I was sure his cousin would not mind if I paid a visit, since I came to see my family and my entire family are here.”
Caroline smiled widely.
“No I am sure he would not mind, he is a very generous man.”
Charles eyes, identical to Caroline’s icy blue, narrowed slightly at her warm praise but he did not comment, instead pulling her toward him in another hug.
“You look very well, Caro. It seems England is agreeing with you.”
Caroline made to answer but did not get the chance as she was suddenly pulled roughly from Charles’ grip.
She looked up in confusion and was surprised and horrified to see Tom, looking murderous, push her gently away from Charles before throwing his fist and landing a fierce blow right onto Charles’ cheek.
“Tom” she screamed now, “what are you doing?”
“Getting this lecherous brute’s paws off you”, he snarled and made to move forward again.
“Stop it”, she screamed again, pulling out of his arm with all her mite. “He’s my brother”.
Tom stopped mid-step and turned to look at her.
“Your brother?” he asked slowly, his breathing harsh.
“Yes, my brother” she shouted back, furious with him.
“Ah, so it is. Hello Charles, nice to see you again.”
Caroline’s jaw dropped at Edward’s nonchalance.
Charles grinned at Edward, seemingly as unfazed as the other man.
“Edward, nice to see you too”, he said as the two men shook hands.
Caroline felt as though she had slipped into a surreal dream, or nightmare rather.
Charles turned back to face Tom and eyed him closely.
“You must be Tom Crawdon. Sorry to drop in unexpected, though it would appear I’ve had my comeuppance” he grinned ruefully, rubbing his cheek and extending his other hand.
“My apologies”, said Tom now grasping Charles’ offered hand, “I thought –“
“You thought some stranger was manhandling my sister. Believe me, I am well pleased to have someone take such good care of her. You must really care about your guests.”
The two gentlemen shared a look that Caroline, still in a state of shock, did not even try to decipher.
Tom broke the brief silence.
“Please, come into the house and we will have someone look at your cheek.”
“It’s nothing that a glass of brandy won’t fix”, Charles said jovially.
The door had opened as this bizarre little exchange was going on and Edward stepped through, handing his hat to a waiting footman.
Both Tom and Charles turned back holding a hand out to Caroline then glancing at each other; Charles’ face once again shrewd and questioning, Tom’s trying and failing to look innocent.
Caroline stared at them both, completely overset by what had just occurred then shook her head and stomped into the house without either of their assistance.
She wished Rebecca and the dowager were here. She’d even take Mrs. Colson at this point.
In the space of a few moments, she’d seen Charles, watched as he was almost knocked clear out by Tom and then listened to them bonding and talking about brandy of all things.
Her head began to ache. And in the midst of it all was the horrible realisation that now whatever chance she and Tom had of being together had been completely obliterated by the arrival of her older and overprotective big brother.
