Austin is angry. For the past fifteen years, he’s believed the woman he loved with every ounce of his soul left him without so much as a backwards glance.

When Lea unexpectedly returns to their hometown, all the years of heartache inside Austin bubbles to the surface and presents itself as blinding rage.

Faced with the truth about the past, a newly discovered secret, these former lovers will learn that if they want to have any chance at the future they’d given up on all those years ago, they will have to rescue one another from drowning in pain so debilitating it will leave them both fighting to breathe.

EXCERPT

“CAN WE STOP by the liquor store on the way to dinner?” Mom asks from the passenger seat of my car.

“Should you be drinking?” I frown then turn onto the main road—well, really the only road in town.

“What’s it going to do, kill me?” she jokes, making me inhale a sharp breath. “Honey,” she says quietly, and I look at her briefly, wondering how the hell she can be so casual about this. “I’m dying. When it will happen, only the good Lord knows, but it is happening, and there is nothing you or I can do about it. I have made my peace with it, and I want you to do the same.” She reaches over to pat my thigh.

“Make peace with it?” I repeat, shaking my head in disbelief.

“Yes, make peace with it. If you think about it, I’m lucky. I know I’m going to die. I know that sooner rather than later God is going to come take me home, and when he does, I will be ready. I will have had a chance to say goodbye to the people I care about and right any wrongs I’ve caused. I’m lucky, honey.”

“What about me?” I wring my hands on the steering wheel, feeling my chest get tight as I fight back tears.

“I love you, honey. I loved you before you were even a sparkle in my eye, and I will always be with you. I know this isn’t easy for you. I know there are going to be a lot of tears shed, but we’re lucky, honey.”

I press my lips together to keep from saying something I might regret. I’m not lucky; in fact, I’m unlucky to the tenth power. How many people have I lost, how many people do I have to loose before it’s enough.

“Oh look! Sheryl!” She yells, pulling me from my thoughts as she reaches over, pressing the horn on my steering wheel while her other hand shoots across me so she can wave out my window. Looking to where she’s waving my heart begins to beat wildly

against my ribcage when I see not Sheryl, but Austin walking into one of the many bars that litter Main Street, only it’s not just Austin—it’s him and a woman with her arm wrapped around the back of his waist as he holds the door open for her.

Even from the distance separating us, my lungs compress at the beauty that is him. The years have been good to him. His hair is still shaggy, only now a little lighter; his face is tan and covered in a beard that makes his crystal blue eyes stand out even more. My eyes travel from his face to his torso, which is covered in a dark green thermal that shows off the muscles of his arms, chest, and tapered waist, then down to his denim-covered thighs. When my gaze sweeps back up, his eyes are on me, and I see them crinkle in confusion then realization that soon turns into anger.

“You missed the liquor store,” my mom complains as I speed up.

BLOG TOUR w/EXCERPT, GIVEAWAY & REVIEW: Sail (The Wake Series #2) by M. Mabie

magic size
 synopsis blue
This isn’t just a two-year long one-night stand. It’s my life.
This is my life. Our life. It isn’t just some careless affair.
I’ve made the worst decisions a woman could, but I’ll earn my second chance.
She can try keeping all the guilt for herself, but I’m just as much to blame.
Loving Casey wasn’t my biggest mistake. Fighting it for so long was.
I’ll show her how fearless our love makes me. I’ll protect her torn heart.
He still has magic in his eyes. He’s the man who makes me happy.
Her voice still brings me to my knees. She says my name like it’s sacred.
I live for the day when I’m his. To take care of him. To love him the way he deserves.
I can’t wait to be all she needs. I can give her a happy life, security and so much love.
Sometimes two ships never meet in the night, but ours did.
Sometimes the water is rough. It beats you all to hell until you have no choice but get stronger.
Our love story reads more like a tragedy, but to me it’s clean and pure.
Let them point their fingers. Without a love like ours, they haven’t really lived. I pity them.
I’m a cheating wife and a villain. I am his honeybee.
I’m a snake in the grass and I sleep best when I’m lying next to his wife.
I want to be his everything.
I’m nothing without her anyway.
This isn’t even close to over.
It’ll never be over.

Sail is the second book in the continuing Wake Series. For more information on the first book in the series see the link for Bait below.

excerpt blue

The room was dimly lit with the few lights we’d left on. It was late, and even though I was tired from travel and just life in general, I craved the feel of him.
Our suite was warm, void of chill or worry. In the bedroom, we didn’t bother with a light, knowing where everything was by memory.
He guided me to bed. He let my hair down and brushed it off my shoulders, and then he held me close and pressed his lips to mine. Casey laid us down so softly I barely knew we were moving until I felt the fluffy pillow under my head.
I deepened our kiss and moaned when his body pressed against mine.
“We’re not going to have sex tonight, Blake,” he said breathlessly around my lips. Why? I wanted him so badly. Just like that. Slow and easy.
I tried to evict thoughts of uncertainty from my mind, but they snuck in with his words. His behavior was contradictory. He’d shown me nothing but affection and care since we saw each other in the airport.
Why wouldn’t he make love to me?
Old demons felt the need to speak up.
What if he doesn’t want you after the chase? What if he only likes the thrill?
I felt my body begin to tense for the first time since we’d arrived. The hands that had been wandering across his back stilled. The leg I had started to wrap around his waist slowly began falling to the side.
“Hey, where are you going,” he said, as he kissed my neck and ran a hand through my hair to the nape of my neck.
“I don’t understand,” I contested. “I want you.” He shifted his weight and I felt how hard he was against my inner thigh. He was definitely turned on. So what was his deal? “Don’t you want me, too?”
“Mmmm,” he breathed near my ear. “God, I want you.” His big right hand hitched my leg back around his hip and he palmed my ass, bringing my dress up to my waist in the process and exposing my pale pink underwear. “I’ve wanted you day and night for so long now. I don’t know how to not want you.” He spoke between kisses and rubbed his nose along my clavicle. Then he bit me gently at the crook of my neck. “But there’ve been too many times I’ve let that need for you cloud my focus.”
“But I—”
“No, Blake. Not tonight. Tonight, I’m going to make you come and then I’m going to sleep next to you. I’m going to fall asleep with you in my arms. All those nights I missed out on holding you and feeling you next to me. I stole them from both of us being scared and stubborn.
I have to be better this time. I see all that you’re doing and I’m so damn proud of you, honeybee,” he said calmly. “But I want more than just physical things from you. It isn’t that I don’t want you. Fuck, do I want you. But I need all of you. Not just this.” He moved against my center and I knew I had to change his mind. After hearing those sweet
words, I had to have him and I wasn’t going to fight fair.
“Please, Casey. Fuck me.”
He growled and pressed his forehead to my chest. “You’re evil.” He laughed. I wished he sounded defeated, but mostly he sounded amused. “You’re not making it easy for me to be noble.”
“Don’t be noble then,” I said as I wound my arms around him and
pulled him closer to me.
“If you knew what I was thinking about doing to you, you’d know I wasn’t.” He rolled partially over toward the center of the bed and ran his hand under my dress and up to my breast.
“Then tell me,” I shamelessly suggested.
The tips of his fingers roamed down my stomach and my pulse sped up. His fingers slid under the sheer fabric of my underwear and my breaths came in spurts as I mentally begged him to keep going. I was so wound up.
“Don’t worry. I told you I’d take care of you.”

Sail (Wake, #2)Sail by M. Mabie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

FINALLY! Blake and Casey were one hot mess. As I read Bait I couldn’t stand Blake. She was flakey and selfish and just got on my nerves with all the lives she affected with her indecisiveness.

She learned her lesson here. She owned up to her mistakes and did what she could to make amends. Casey, too, owned up to his part of the mess they made. Though I don’t think much of the blame lies with him, I could see where he could have done things differently. It might have changed the outcome.

Seeing them get closer and bond on a deeper level was sweet. You could see that it wasn’t just a love affair they had… They had a true friendship. Their cute texting banter was entertaining. Their conversations were comical and you could see the ease with which their relationship flowed.

And Grant? Whoa! I didn’t really expect such a 180 in his personality but there was a point where I could see it coming. Smh. That was crazy but added to the realness of how decisions made can affect other people. We all have our moments and Grant’s was bound to happen.

I can admit that the pace of this story could throw some people off, but I think that is what made it so good. The story was told in a way that even when I wanted to strangle Blake myself, I was so invested in everything that there was no way I couldn’t finish to know what happens. I loved Casey from the start and I wanted to make sure that he got what he deserved. This was a great read. 🙂

New Forever Teaser #3

Excerpt (1)

“Why are we doing this again?” Dee asks when I park my car.

“Because you’re my best friend.”

“Pulling the best friend card again?”

“And because you love me,” I remind her with a smirk.

“I can’t stand you,” she corrects.

With my hand tucked in Dee’s arm, we walk together into a bridal store. I lean my head on her shoulder and wait for a sales associate to approach us.

“I already have my dress,” Dee whispers for the hundredth time today.

“But I don’t and I want to be a bride for the day.” More so, I want a day of fun and silliness. I want to forget the troubles life has thrown at me and just have a few hours of pure ridiculousness.

“Fine, but-”

“Ladies,” a sales associate says, getting our attention. “How can I help you?”

Dee looks back at me nervously so I pinch her arm so she’ll stay quiet. I’m going to be a bride and she’s not going to ruin my fun.

“We’re getting married,” I tell the lady, who smiles back at me. “We both want to wear dresses, but I think only one of us should wear a princess type gown. I mean, how cheesy would we look if we wore similar dresses. And lets face it, babe, I’m more of a princess than you,” I tell Dee who is attempting first degree murder with her eyes.

“Oh,” the sales associate says. “You two are… together?”

“Yes.” I beam back at her while I hold on to Dee’s arm so she doesn’t leave me before I have the chance to try on a single dress.

“Fantastic.” She claps her hands together in the same way Josie does.

“See,” I tell Dee, “fantastic!”

“My name is Rosa, and I’m sure we can find you both dresses you can agree on. Just go to the back of the showroom and I’ll take back different styles of dresses so you can choose which ones to try on.”

“I think a short dress for my bride would be good.” I wink at Dee, who bites her bottom lip.

“She has a thing for my long legs,” Dee tells Rosa and I’m so happy Dee is finally playing along that I throw myself into her arms.

Dee and I walk to the dressing room together, our steps light and carefree—it’s hard to believe there’s a war waging inside of me.

It’s been a very strained eleven days since Max told me about his parents’ involvement in Hannah’s death and he still acts as if he’s the one that forced the pills down my sister’s throat. We’ve tried to move forward with our relationship but there are several layers of discomfort between us that is making it difficult.

At least we’re living together again and sleeping in the same bed. It’s a shame that all we’re doing in our bed is sleeping though.

I miss Max. I see him every day, talk to him countless times a day, but I still miss him. He can be right next to me but still be so far away. I just can’t get to him.

I want to beg him to silence his mind and listen to his heart so that he can find peace. The heart knows how to heal itself—it’s the mind that makes the task so difficult. And Max’s mind never shuts off.

I wish I could have chosen who I’d fall in love with. He’d have all the same qualities as Max, but with a mind that came with an off switch. But you don’t get to choose. Instead you’re stuck in love with a man that is all wrong for you, but you can’t breathe without, because he’s also perfect for you.

“Earth to Hayley.” Dee snaps her fingers in front of my face, bringing me back to the fitting room where I just removed my top and jeans.

“Have you talked to Max, yet?” Dee asks me as she undoes the buttons on her jeans.

“Not yet.” I take the dress in Rosa’s outstretched hand and with Dee’s help, get into the crinoline and then the big puffy dress.

After Dee ties the corset in the back, I step out of the dressing room and look at myself in three full length mirrors. The dress is beautiful, but far too intricate. I want something a bit simpler. Maybe with an open back, I think as I pick my hair up in a messy bun and try to look at my back. I bite my lower lip as I examine myself from every angle and as much as I like the dress, it doesn’t scream out Hayley.

“Beautiful, but not you,” Dee says, confirming my thoughts. “A little less shininess,” she tells Rosa.

“And an open back.” Dee nods in agreement while I look at her in a short white strapless dress.

She looks good, but Dee could make a mu-mu look good. Of course, her actual wedding dress is stunning, putting anything she tries on today to shame.

“Tall strappy heels,” I tell her and she nods enthusiastically.

“And a hat,” she shouts and I look back at her confused. “You know, one of those old fashion hats with a short veil over your face.”

“Wrong dress for that, love.”

Dee looks at Rosa who agrees with me and her expression quickly turns to disappointment until Rosa runs off promising to come back with a dress we’ll both love. While we wait for her, I try on another dress that isn’t quite to my liking.

“When are you gonna talk to him?” Dee asks, continuing our earlier conversation.

“I don’t know, Dee. We’re still not doing all that great and I don’t want to build an even bigger wedge between us.” I step out of my dress and juggle Dee’s new breasts in my hands when Rosa opens the curtains and hands us our dresses to try on. Dee flushes along with Rosa, but seriously her breasts are probably her best investment yet. They’re not too big or too uncomfortable to look at, but voluptuous C-cups with a perfect lift. To think, she laughed at me when I told her she should get implants.

Dee smacks my hands away so she can try on the dress. “You have a right to talk to his parents,” she states firmly.

Of course I do, but I have to be careful how I approach the subject with Max. He loves me, I know he does and I know he’d do anything to make me happy, but he carries the guilt of his parents’ sin like a coat. I don’t want to push him too hard, too fast.

How cute are we, trying to protect one another from each other?

I slip on the new dress, having to tug a bit more than I’d like over my chest, but I immediately know I’ll love it. Even in its snugness, it feels right. I look back at Dee who is smiling so big you’d think I actually was a bride.

She pushes me to the mirrors and I let out a happy breath when I see myself. If I were actually getting married, this would be the dress I’d pick. There are some flashy pink beads on the bottom, but not much elsewhere aside from the train and the belt that hugs my waist. The back is open and while my breasts feel like they are about to pop out, the top half is just as stunning.

“This is it,” Dee whispers, her eyes filling with tears.

Rosa smiles at both of us, handing Dee a tissue which she obediently takes and blots her eyes with.

“If you’re sure, I can get your measurements to make sure we order you the right dress.”

Dee nods her head and I’m tempted to smack her. This is a dress for a pretend wedding for a pretend bride. Get a grip!

“We have an appointment at another store,” I tell Rosa, whose delight quickly sobers. “If we don’t find anything there, you’ll definitely hear back from us.”

“Of course, of course. You have to be one hundred percent sure.” Rosa nods and I almost feel bad. There goes her pretty commission.

Dee and I go back into our changing room where Dee continues to blot her eyes and I can’t help but roll mine at her. “Have you lost your mind?” I hiss at her and she smiles back at me sheepishly. “Quit crying, crazy, and help me out of this dress.”

“Fine,” she agrees reluctantly. “But let me take some pictures first. That way, when you do get married we can have a dress like this made.”

Yeah, when I get married. First, I have to find a guy that can stand the sight of me without running for the hills from guilt.

I lift my arms and am nearly pulled out of my own skin when the dress catches just below my breasts. I close my eyes and suck in a deep breath to make myself skinner when Dee pulls on the dress again to no avail.

“Dee,” I whisper when I hear her nervous giggles.

“Give me a minute,” she says as she pushes my left tit against my chest and pulls the dress over it. “Okay,” she grunts and does the same to my right tit. Only this time the dress doesn’t budge so she tries again.

“Try pulling it down,” I suggest and she does, but again nothing moves. “Holy shit! I’m stuck!”

“I’m gonna get Rosa.”

“Don’t you dare!” I grab at Dee blindly and feel my eyes widen. Have my breasts always been this big? Unless I’ve somehow gained weight thereby making my boobs bigger. It’s not like it’s even possible for me to be pregnant since I’m on the pill. No part of me wants to get on that damn scale in my apartment to check my weight. It’s just the dress. Of course, it’s just the dress, it’s too small, definitely not my size. “Don’t you leave me, Dee, or I swear I’ll kick your ass.”

“Okay, okay. I have scissors in my purse, maybe if I make a tiny slit-”

“Yes, whatever.”

I hear her rummage through her purse while I stand helpless with my hands in the air. Suddenly the rummaging stops and I hear her begin to make little cuts into the dress. When Dee stops snipping at the dress and hisses in a breath, I hold in my own breath. Something’s happened.

“Shit,” she whispers and I freeze. “Shit, shit, shit.”

“Dee,” I say slowly.

“Don’t laugh,” Dee warns me and I wait. “I got chocolate on your dress.”

“How’d you get chocolate on the dress?” I whisper back, suppressing the laughter building inside of me. We’ve broken and stained my perfect wedding dress.

“Adam is anti-chocolate bars so I hide them in my purse, and, uh, they melted. I didn’t see it until I made a small cut in your dress. The good news is, I think the dress will come off.”

I hold my breath again and close my eyes while Dee slips the dress off. I give myself a moment to sigh in relief at my freedom, but then look for the chocolate smudge print.

“Fucking Adam,” I say, because this is obviously his fault. Him and his stupid healthy living.

Excerpts

Broken Hart excerpt

Raising my eyes to him, I checked to see if he was noticing what was happening, only to find his eyes blazing back into mine.  The look he gave me was pure combustible heat, and it left me with absolutely no doubt that he felt whatever was happening too.

He shook his head as though he was trying to clear it, and returned to massaging as I closed my eyes and tried to process what the hell was happening—and my reaction to it.   When he rubbed the arch of my foot again, I couldn’t help it, and I moaned.  My eyes snapped open, and I prayed that maybe he hadn’t heard me.

His hand slid from the arch of my foot up to my left ankle as his other hand gripped my right ankle.  Using my ankles as leverage, he jerked me toward him. I wasn’t dumb and I knew what that meant.  Clearly, he had heard me. I was trying to process all of that as he bent forward and kissed first one knee, then the other.

I took a shocked breath and my jaw dropped as I stared at the top of his head.  Raising his eyes to mine, Dante asked, “Rina.  I want this.  Do you?”

The line was shockingly easy to cross.

Looking him straight in the eye I answered honestly and without hesitation. “Yes.  God, yes.”

Loving Hart excerpt

He looked gorgeous, as always, and I struggled to remember to breathe for a minute.  He works out like a mad man, and his body is to die for.  After giving me a kiss and a hug, Spence escorted me into his living room.  Taking a spot on his couch, I smiled when he took the seat at the other end.

“What’s up angel?  What do you need?”

I’d already decided not to beat around the bush, so I dove right in.  “Don’t flip out. I’m here because I need to kiss you again, and I want you to give me my first orgasm. It’s time.”

I paused when he gasped, and I could see that he was going to argue with me.  “Shush Spence.  Listen to me before you say no.”

He nodded tersely, so at least I knew he was listening.

“I’m a virgin, and we both know I’m saving it for you.”

The look on his face was a mixture of shock, discomfort and arousal.  “Jesus, Delilah, shoot straight much? That’s… I mean… I don’t know what the fuck to even say.”

“You can cut the crap and admit that you’ve known all along that I was waiting for you.  I don’t mind waiting, not that I’m going to sit on my ass forever, but before I start taking care of my needs myself, I want you to get me there.  I want all my firsts to happen with you.”

“Oh, fuck.  I don’t even…”

Holding up my hand, I told him to hush.  “You can run from everyone else Spencer Cross, but you’ll never be able to run from me.  I know you want this and you’ve wanted it for a long time. You’ve been waiting for me to come to you again.  Well, here I am. Someday, you’ll have all of me.  Until you’re ready to take that step, I’m asking you to give me this.”

I saw the exact moment that he accepted what I’d said as being true, and I knew he was going to do it. His eyes were like a firestorm when he looked at me.  “If this is what you really want angel, then yes. You’re right.  I want to give it to you.  Tell me how you want me to do this.”

Standing, I took his hand in mine as I started walking toward his bedroom.  I walked fast, letting go of his hands when we got in so that I could throw myself on his bed.  After enjoying a little bounce, I propped myself on my elbow and stared at him as he stood over the bed.

“You can start by kissing me.  How it goes from there is up to you.”

Missing Hart excerpt

Turning on my heel I ran for the door, desperate to be away from him.  I swung it open at the same moment he reached a hand out and slammed it.  Pivoting,  I glared up at him.  “What the hell are you doing?  You can’t let go of the past and I’m done being your fucking punching bag.  What do you want?”

Pushing me roughly against the door he wrapped his fingers in my hair and pulled me against him.

“You!  Goddammit, I fucking want you.”

We met each other halfway, mouths smashing against each other in a kiss so intense that it was painful. My body went up in flames, the blood in my veins flowing hot for him. Our hands collided as we started ripping at each other’s clothes.  He bunched my skirt up to my waist and tore my panties off as I struggled to get his jeans open.  Finally I succeeded, reaching in and pulling his massively swollen erection out of his jeans and positioning it right at my center, marveling out how wet I was as I drenched his swollen head with my arousal.

With one hard thrust, he was in so deep that it hurt.  After not being penetrated for four years, he filled me to capacity and then some.  I screamed out in ecstasy and clawed at his shirt as his hips pumped into me at warp speed.  My back was banging against the door with every punishing thrust and I didn’t care.  I felt him in every part of my body as he pounded in and out, our mouths smashed together as we kissed like two maniacs.  We were a mess of teeth and tongue, the pain turning immediately into pleasure.

Synopsis

“A good chef can throw seemingly random ingredients into a pot and create something delicious. On rare occasions, fate does the same thing with hearts. With the right combination of elements at just the right time, a couple can fall head over heels in love. That being said, blending two lives can get messier than any kitchen and also a hell of a lot harder to clean up.”

Molly’s food truck took Austin by storm, and she’s got more prospects than she knows what to do with. Her crazy ex is out of the picture, and she’s moved in with her gorgeous boyfriend, Joe. She and Joe rarely see one another, and when they do, their time is squandered arguing. Molly’s anxious to break this cycle because the tension between them is literally making her sick.

After years alone and shattered, Molly has reawakened a part of Joe that he was sure couldn’t be revived. He’s terrified of losing her, but their combined baggage makes every step forward seem littered with landmines. Molly’s more than worth the fight, but she shouldn’t be the one he’s constantly battling. A master carpenter by trade, Joe has restored countless treasures which seemed beyond repair. He’s determined that he and Molly won’t be the exception.

Excerpt

I found myself looking over at Joe’s perfect profile, and felt that familiar ache in my chest. Frustrated at our disjointed state and suddenly overwhelmed with emotion, I stopped in my tracks. Joe turned to face me, a perplexed expression marring his flawlessness. I placed my hands on both of his uncharacteristically smooth cheeks and looked him in the eye.

“I love you, Joe.” I felt my throat narrow painfully, and blinked away unexpected tears.

“I love you, too.” His frown deepened and he brushed my sweeping bangs away from my eyes. “What’s wrong, Molly?”

It was a good question and I wished I had a reasonable explanation. We’d come so far and been through so much, it seemed unfair that we couldn’t get it together long enough to enjoy any of it. I’d been wracking my brain for weeks to find the right thing to say, a verbal Band-Aid to slap over a hemorrhaging wound. It made me wish my love life could be as straightforward as my job.

A good chef can throw random ingredients into a pot and create something delicious. On rare occasions, fate does the same thing with hearts. With the right combination of elements at just the right time, a couple can fall head over heels in love. That being said, blending two lives can get messier than any kitchen and also a hell of a lot harder to clean up. I wasn’t usually such a bawl baby, but when it came to Joe, all bets were off. I was freaked out about “us” just then, and what we were becom- ing. I pulled his face down to meet mine and kissed his lips delicately, so he wouldn’t be covered in my lipstick all night.

“Let’s try to enjoy ourselves and talk about the ugly stuff afterwards. Okay?”

Blurb

Darkness is the only thing I see. Ever since the day my life changed. The day that everything and everyone I held close to me ceased to exist. The day I lost it all and the demons of my past consumed my every waking moment.

I tried to keep others at arm’s length. Tried not to let my darkness taint them. Ruin them. Harm them. And whether I want to admit it or not, as much as I wish I could keep them locked out, they refuse to leave. Refuse to let me suffer alone.

If I hadn’t been so focused on keeping those demons from flying free, I wouldn’t have missed how one perfect angel was able to sneak her way under my skin—refusing to let go. Making me want things I don’t deserve.

She consumes me. Her beauty knows no end. The love she promises tempts me every time she’s near. But that pure heart that makes her MY Emmy is the one thing I’m convinced I’ll destroy if I ever let her close.

I’m a broken man. A broken man with too much darkness in his soul to ever let her light shine upon me. But even that doesn’t stop me from craving her with every single breath in my body.

**This is the final book in the Corps Security series. This book is not suitable for younger readers. There is strong language, adult situations, and some violence.*

Prologue—Maddox

Six weeks.  It’s been over a goddamn month since Emmy ran from me.

Just gone.

It took me three days to find her—thanks to the tracking device I had placed on her car—down in some small Podunk town in south Florida.  Even if she had been trying to hide, she’d done a shit job of it.  One search for her parents would have brought me right to her.

It took me longer to actually get eyes on her than it had to find her.  She was holed up in some cheap-ass hotel for three weeks.  She called in her meals and never left the room.  And unfortunately, I had to leave and rush home when things out of my control needed attention and I again had to pull Asher’s head out of his ass.  Now I’m back and I’m not leaving until I get my hands on her.

She doesn’t want to be found.  I know that, but damn if I’m going to let her run off and get away for good.  I’ve pushed and pushed her away.  Every bone in my body has screamed at me to take what she’s been offering for years.  I’ve seen her, I know what she wants, but I won’t let my demons hurt her.  Not my Emmy.

Since day one, she’s been the greatest temptation, but I refused to take everything innocent that is Emmy and let my blackness take her.  Because that’s what will happen.  It will wrap around her soul and slowly choke the life out of her.  Just like every other person I’ve allowed in.

I’ll taint her.  I’ll ruin her.  And in the end, it will destroy her.

One smile from her made me fall.  So I pushed her away.  I told her that she would never be what I need—that I would never want her.  God, if she only knew.  I crave her and everything she keeps trying to hand me.  I crave her and everything she could give me.  My very being calls out to her, and I work daily to refuse it.

So I pushed.

Until she ran.

But that ends right now.

Looking up at the gaudy neon lights thrown on the top of this hellhole, I know that was my first mistake.

SYN.

A motherfucking strip club.

This is not a place where my angel belongs.  Just the thought of her inside this club makes my skin crawl.  I can feel my anger becoming a force of its own as the blackness in my soul threatens to burst through.  It’s burning inside my veins and demanding blood.  My nostrils flare, making my breaths come in loud pants.  My fist clenches—demanding something to pound into, something to destroy.  My skin feels tight.  Every vein in my body is pulsing with each wild beat of my heart.

I’m going to explode.

The bouncer doesn’t even give me a second thought.  He gives me a brief glance as I pay the twenty bucks to gain my access into the hellish place.   I immediately rip my sunglasses off, taking in every inch of the room.  Black walls with dim lighting, stereotypical red carpeting and leather booths lining the room.   They have the name right with the smell of this place—sex and sin with a mixture of smoke and sweat.  There are three stages set up around the room, the center one being the largest and two smaller ones to the left and right, with a bar against the back wall and one on the top floor.

The whole top-floor bar area is set up on a glass floor, giving these douchebags around the room the perfect view between the barely dressed servers’ legs.  Taking my eyes off the top floor, where the bartenders are clearly working the glass floor to their advantage, I scan the room again, squinting my eyes to see through the dim lighting and heavy smoke.

That’s when I spot her.

“What. The. Fuck,” I snarl under my breath.

The anger I felt earlier burning through my body starts to boil.  It’s almost as if my body becomes a force of its own.  The monsters inside me wanting free.

There she stands, not even five feet away, looking exhausted, wearing next to nothing.  Her skirt—if that’s what you want to call it—is more like a napkin someone cut in half.  From the way she stands—slightly to the side—I can just make out the perfect roundness of her ass peeking out the bottom of the hem.  Her pert tits are pushed together and held in a tight bikini top, the fabric so thin that I can see the outline of her nipples clear as day.

My eyes take in every inch of her exposed skin and I want to roar with rage.

No one should see her like this.  No one but me.  And even though I don’t have the right to feel this way about her, there isn’t a damn thing that can stop me now.

She hasn’t seen me yet, so I stalk over to where she’s standing.  She turns right when I’m about to reach out for her and her eyes go wide, shock and alarm clear in her beautiful, honey-brown eyes.

“Wha—”

“What the fuck are you doing, Em?” I bite out.

She shrinks back at my tone before she catches herself and goes stiff.  I can tell instantly that I’m not going to like anything she has to say.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me, Emmy.  What in the hell are you doing in this place?”

She tilts her head slightly, taking me in.  Her eyes leave mine and roam the room before she gives a stiff nod.  When she turns her focus back to me, I go stock-still at her words.

“I’m exactly where I should be, Maddox.  I’m home.”  Her tone is submissive, and that fury inside me goes from a boiling fire to ice cold.

With that, she turns and stalks off towards the bar.  And I see that not only is her ass hanging out, but so are her hot-pink boy shorts.

“Dude.  She’s a fine piece of ass, right?”  The man she was just talking to speaks in awe.

“Shut your fucking mouth,” I growl, feeling that rage return like a switch has been flipped.

“Ah, you’re new here.  Just sit back, my friend, and get ready for the show.”  He laughs, takes a deep pull from his beer, and turns his attention back to the main stage, where the current entertainment is doing her best to swallow the fucking pole with her pussy.  She’s working so hard for it that she might as well be fucking the damn thing.

I’m no stranger to strip clubs.  Back when the guys were all single, we would hit some local ones around California.  No better way to let off some steam from the shit that is constantly swirling around in my head than to sit in a room full of naked woman.  Where the music pounds into your body, the drinks are always flowing, and the pussy is in abundance.

One thing’s for sure: This isn’t a place for Emmy.  Hell no.

Without taking my eyes from Emmy, I drop my body into the nearest booth.  She’s in a heated argument with the bartender and an older man who looks about as run-down as this fucking town.  She throws her hands in the air, her head moving wildly, and if I had to guess, her stunning eyes are burning bright.  She points over to me a few times, and all the older man does is shake his head, obviously not giving her what she wants.  I just scowl at them from the booth, waiting for her to walk her ass back over here so I can explain to her that it’s time to go.

“Hey there, handsome,” a raspy voice says to my right.  “Looking for some fun tonight?  I bet a big man like you would be up for something wild.”

“No.”  I don’t even look at her.  My eyes never leave Emmy—who is now looking at me.  A mix of ire and hurt is written all over her face.  Even with the shit lighting in this place, I can see it…and I hate it.

Fucking hurt?  Is she serious right now?  Pissed I can understand.  She didn’t want to be found and I found her.

“I won’t bite, baby.  That is unless you want me to.”  Her hands snake around my neck and down my chest.

Turning my attention away from Emmy, I look at the bleach-blonde hair, weathered skin, and fake tan of this bitch in front of me.  I’ll give her credit—she tries to hide it with more than enough makeup for about ten women, but this piece of work in front of me has to be pushing fifty.

“I said no, woman.  What part of that didn’t you understand?  And for the last time, do not touch me.”  I reach up and pull her hand off my stomach before she can go any further.

Moving my eyes back to where I last saw Emmy has me coming up empty.  What the hell?  I scan the room but she is still nowhere to be found.

“Ah, sweet cheeks.  I know what you want.  Good luck with that one.  Rose doesn’t play around, and honey, why would you want her when you can have me?  After all, I taught her everything she knows.”  She leans down and, before I can guess her intent, licks my neck, clearly taking my distraction at her words to her advantage.

I turn swiftly and move into her space, making sure she doesn’t mix this shit up in her head to think that I would somehow ever want her ass.

“Do. Not. Touch. Me.  You got that, sweet cheeks?”

She looks me in the eyes for a few beats before throwing her head back and laughing.  The sound of it hits my ears like nails on a chalkboard.

“Your loss.”

When she walks off, I start my scan of the room again.  No Emmy in sight.  I run my hand over my buzzed scalp before settling in for the wait.

Thirty minutes later and I still haven’t found her.  The crowd is getting restless.  The chicks taking turns on the stage now haven’t been impressive and they undoubtedly want more.  The pole humper has moved on to one of the smaller stages.  The last act on the main stage was slightly better, but all she did was basically finger-fuck herself on the stage before fumbling to get to her feet on her ridiculous heels.

Jesus Christ.

I wait, determined not to leave until I have her with me.  Another thirty minutes and two more rotations on the stages have my frustration levels going up even higher.  How the hell did she just disappear?  I know she didn’t leave.  The tracking device on her car, which is sitting right next to my truck in the parking lot, hasn’t alerted me of any movement.  I’ll be damned if she takes off on me again.

After signaling over another server, I order a beer and check my phone again to make sure the tracker isn’t malfunctioning.  I’m just putting my phone in my pocket when a deep voice cuts over the music.

“Gentleman of Syn.  It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for.  The one your dicks have been begging for all fucking night.  The Princess of Syn herself.  The one and only, Rose!”

The Princess of Syn?  What an idiot.  I laugh to myself, placing my beer to my lips for a long pull.  The music starts and the first few notes of Lollipop by Framing Hanley fill the air.  Got to give this chick props—at least she picked a good song.

The house lights go down, plunging the room into darkness, before a spotlight hits the main stage.  The smoke clinging to the air gives the stage an eerie glow.  I take my eyes off the action and attempt scan the darkness of the room again for Emmy.  Movement by the back corner catches my attention at the same time that the crowd goes electric.  Idiots start throwing their money left and right, calling to this Princess of Syn to take them.

What morons.

I focus on the corner again and see the blonde from earlier smiling her wicked smile at me before pointing to the stage.  Turning back to the stage, I watch as a woman, who I assume is this so-called princess, spins effortlessly on the pole, her movements all but blurring her body from the men wishing she were spinning on their dicks.  It doesn’t take me long to see why the bitch from earlier is telling me to look.

With one quick spin, her hands are placed at the center and her legs are spread wide and parallel to the pole, showing off her barely there G-sting, I see my Emmy.  It takes a second for the shock to wear off, and in that second, she gracefully drops from her spin with a guarded smile to the men crowding the stage.  Lifting her small hands from her side, she drags them up her flat stomach to take her tits in hand and jiggles them.

Fucking jiggles them.

I can’t control my body at this point.  I’m focused on one thing—the best way to get her off that stage and out of this place.

She reaches up and, in a move that is obviously practiced, removes her top, throwing it in to the crowd.  There she dances with her body on display, caressing her naked tits until her nipples pebble.  Turning her back to the room, she bends at the waist and starts to slowly pull her G-sting down her long, toned legs.

This is when the reality of this situation hits me.  I’ll fucking kill all of these motherfuckers in the room.

Then she drops to her knees before getting on all fours and crawling towards the end of the stage.

Hell.  No.

I’m on my feet in seconds, stalking through the crowd, pushing any man who stands in the way of my woman and me.  I don’t even lift my arms from my side.  I just barrel through the bodies with one goal in mind.

She doesn’t see me coming since she’s back on her feet and walking to the pole again.  With a leap that would make my high school track coach proud, I’m on the stage, and a second later, I have a naked Emmy thrown over my shoulders before I jump off the stage.  The sharp pain up my leg does nothing to extinguish my determination.

I can see the bouncers coming, and with one hand on her slick ass, I reach out and punch the first one in the face, taking great pleasure watching him instantly buckle to the floor.  The other one comes at me from the side, but he doesn’t get far before I pick up the chair to my left one-handed and crack it against his fucking head.

Emmy is struggling with such vigor that I’m forced to put her down.  She looks up, ready to spit fire at me, before snapping her mouth shut when she sees the expression on my face.  I have no doubt that I look just as feral as I feel.

“Don’t you open that sweet fucking mouth, Emersyn.  I swear to Christ, now is not the time to fucking piss me off any further.”

I rip my shirt off and roughly pull it over her head.  She struggles and puts up a fight, momentarily distracting me from the third bouncer coming at full throttle.  His fist takes me by surprise, but not for long.  Grabbing her wrist so she doesn’t get away, I turn to the motherfucker stupid enough to get in my way.

“You shouldn’t have done that,” I seethe.

He goes to punch me again, but I duck and pop up before he realizes he failed.  Bringing my head forward, I head-butt him right between the eyes and almost smile when he falls instantly.

I’m stopped at the door by the last bartender she was speaking with earlier.  He goes to make a move but pulls up when he sees the look in my eyes.  I’ll fucking kill and I’m sure it’s written clear as day on my face.

“Do it.  I dare you.”  My tone leaves no room for argument.  I’m leaving with her and there isn’t a person on this Earth who can stop me.

My Review

Oh my sweet Maddox.  Of all the men at Corps Security, I just knew that Maddox was going to be an intense story.  Seeing his character in all the previous books, I saw that he was the one that held the most pain.  The quiet reserved usually are.  My heart ached for Maddox.  It did before I even started this book.  He silently struggled with so much pain and anguish all the while being the rock that helped the rest of the guys fight the inner demons and find happiness with their loves.

Towards the end of Cooper’s story, we were given a glimpse of what was in store for Maddox.  Emmy told him flat out she was willing to fight for him and that she did.  He had loads of guilt and hurt he’d held on to for so long, he didn’t know how to be himself without it.

Throughout this series Emmy was a silent character. She made appearances and we knew that she was in love with Maddox and that Maddox did everything in his power to avoid her.  In this book, we finally get to see Emmy and learn so much about her.  I always pictured her as the quiet shy type when I came across her cameos in the previous books.  Boy, was I wrong.  I think she may be one of the strongest heriones out of all of them.  She came from such a horrible life but she never let that dictate how she was going to live.  She was hell bent on living her life and moving past it all.  This was exactly what Maddox needed.  He needed someone strong that was willing to show him the way.  Emmy did that and so much more.

I have to say that this was the most that aside from Beck’s story, this was the most emotional story of the series.  It literally pulled at my ripped my heart out in some moments but boy did it raise it back up so much higher.  Maddox and Emmy’s story has got to be one of my favorites.

5-Stars

harper

Harper lives in small town Georgia just a short drive from her hometown of Peachtree City. She (and her 3 daughters) enjoy ruling the house they dubbed ‘Estrogen Ocean’, much to her husbands chagrin. Harper has a borderline unhealthy obsession with books; you can almost ALWAYS find her with her eReader attached. She enjoys bad reality TV and cheesy romantic flicks. Her favorite kind of hero–the super alpha kind!

Harper started using writing as a way to unwind when the house went to sleep at night; and with a house full of crazy it was the perfect way to just relax. It didn’t take long before a head full of very demanding alphas would stop at nothing to have their story told.
