about the book

Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled series, returns with a brand new funny, romantic, sexy story!

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy and Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that—that, I know how to do.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Sustained was such a great read. It was funny, romantic, emotional and filled with such great characters. I was in love with Jake from the get-go.

“What the hell am I doing here? I don’t do complicated, I avoid distractions, and up until this point, that strategy has served me well.”

Told entirely from Jake’s point of view, we meet a hot shot defense attorney that has always been about the win, in the court room. In the bedroom, he’s all about the pleasure and ready to send the girl packing by morning.

He could come across as cocky, at times, but he was such a great guy. And there’s something about a man that reveals secret tattoos under his pristine suit. That’s just gets my blood pumping…as much as it did for Chelsea.

“I lose myself in those clear blue eyes. Endless and cerulean, like tropical seas. And my voice is barely a whisper. ‘All the time. I can’t remember not wanting you anymore.'”

Chelsea was a great girl. She was kind, honest, sweet and so loving to her nieces and nephews. I wouldn’t have been able to take on 6 kids at once. Especially when they range from infant to teenager. She did an awesome job and when she and Jack get together they are, instantly, the perfect couple. Literally.

Jake was first drawn to her innocent beauty but little by little her kind heart and seeing her with the kids just digs deeper into his heart but his fear of never being good enough for her and the kids keeps him at a distance. And for someone that isn’t a fan of pint size humans, he’s absolutely adorable with the kids. He’s a natural and funny and just gives them all what they need without even knowing it.

“’Playing with fire is fun if you know what you’re doing.’ My hand runs through her hair. ‘And I definitely know what I’m doing.’”

The children had such unique and entertaining personalities. They rounded the story out so perfectly. Each one of them was just adorable and absolutely lovable.

I laughed and nearly cried but from beginning to end, I smiled non-stop as I read. I highly recommend Sustained and give it more than 5 stars.

“Looking over her shoulder back at me, her reddish hair glowing like gold in the firelight, she raises an eyebrow. ‘So…you’re not trying to seduce me?’ I meet her gaze head-on. And wink. ‘I didn’t say that.’”
